Fonte Oxygen Liberada para Testes

A equipe de desenvolvimento do KDE, seguindo o mesmo caminho que a Canonical e o GNOME, resolveu criar sua própria fonte para uso em seus projetos digitais: a fonte Oxygen. A Oxygen Fonts foi projetada por Vernon Adams e pode ser obtida neste repositório do projeto KDE.
O objetivo do Projeto está na criação de uma fonte para uso integrado ao ambiente KDE. De acordo com o README encontrado no repositório, a fonte Oxygen tem como objetivo ser clara, legível, sem serifa (i. é: basicamente, uma fonte com a mesma espessura em todo o seu contorno, o que aumenta e muito sua legibilidade à distância), e que possa ser renderizada com qualidade em sistemas GNU/Linux utilizando o Freetype Font Engine.
New Empathy’s Icon

Empathy is receiving a new and beautiful icon. Since the first release Empathy was using the Telepathy logo as an icon.
New Empathy Icon
According to this Bug Report, the old icon suffers from different problems like:
- doesn’t make it clear what Empathy does;
- Uses body parts which is against GNOME’s Icon Guidelines;
- Implies that Empathy is Telepathy, which is a lie.
I kind of agree about it but I really liked the old icon. But if Gnome Guidelines says to change, we change. I strongly recommend to red the Bug Report in witch the new icon was proposed, there are a lot of nice other icons there beyond some cross-reference like, the Telepahty icon resembles this Pulp Fiction scene at 1min and 38sec. Now look this:

O cliente de IM padrão do gnome, Empathy, ganhou um novo e belo ícone. Desde o primeiro lançamento do Empathy ele estava utilizando o Logo o Telepathy como um ícone.

De acordo com esse Bug Report, o ícone antigo sofria de diversos outros problemas como:
- Não deixa claro o que o Empathy faz;
- Utiliza partes do corpo humano, o que é contra o GNOME’s Icon Guidelines;
- Implica que o Empathy é o Telepathy, o que é uma mentira.
De certa forma eu concordo, mas eu gostava do ícone antigo. Mas se o Gnome Guidelines diz que temos que mudar, o que podemos fazer?! Eu recomendo a leitura do Bug Report no qual o ícone foi proposto, há vários outros ícones legais lá, além de algumas referências cruzadas como o ícone do Telepathy se parecer com essa cena do filme Pulp Fiction aos 1min e 38seg. Agora olhe isso:

Reading my old feeds in GoogleReader I ran into a post in Cosimo’s blog, in the blogs.gnome.org, where he spoke abou the Nautilus 3.0 and the new default Gnome 3.0 Theme.
For those who follow the Gnome Planet, is already aware about the paths Gnome 3 is following, for those who don’t this is the link. According to the original article, which I strongly recommend you to read, the new Nautilus brings many new thins like the new streamlined toolbar, a new sidebar design, and the use of “floating” statusbars to reduce the UI chrome.

Lendo meus feeds atrasado no GoogleReader acabei encontrando um post no Cosimo’s blog, em blogs.gnome.org, onde ele falava sobre o Nautilus 3.0 e o tema padrão do Gnome 3.0.
Para quem acompanha o Gnome Planet, já viu o mock up do Gnome 3, para quem não viu o link é este. Conforme destacado no post original, o qual eu recomendo a leitura completa, o novo Nautilus, trás diversas novidades como a nova barra lateral esquerda e o uso de uma “statusbar” flutuante para reduzir a utilização de chrome na interface.

Hoje foi anunciado no Blog do UbuntuOne, que o serviço homônimo ganhou um novo logo.

De acordo com o anuncio oficial, eles decidiram “vestir” o serviço de acordo com a ocasião, uma vez que este está passando por grandes mudanças:
- O serviço se tornou muito mais estável;
- A “nova” funcionalidade de streaming de músicas;
- O lançamento de novos clientes para Windows e Android.
Além disso, o time de Design resolveu inovar também os ícones que representam os serviços oferecidos pelo UbuntuOne. Mais detalhes no Blog do UbuntuOne.

Today was announced at the UbuntuOne Blog, that the service with the same name is getting a new logo.

According to the official announcement, they’ve decided to dress UbuntuOne with new clothes in order to match the ocasion, since the service is going through exciting changes:
- The services become more reliable;
- The “new” music streaming service;
- They’re close to launch full-fledged clients for Windows and Android.
Also, the design team has come up with a lot of changes for the icons that represent each UbuntuOne service. More details at the UbuntuOne Blog.
Gnome 3 Buttons Aren’t Gone

As I have said before, the Gnome 3 Design and Development team has taken the decision to remove the maximize e minimize window button, but they haven’t announced yet if this deprecated functionality would be permanently disable or only hidden by default.
Yesterday, was posted in Diego’s Blog (one of the GNOME Project contributors) formalizing that the maximize and minimize window feature will be kept active and accessible through the window menu (right mouse click) or through conventional shortcuts, beyond the new gestures foreseen to the new Gnome 3.
Other detail, is possible to reactivate the minimize and maximize windows controllers using the “gsettings” (command line) or the Gconf_editor. In order to reactivate the buttons in Gnome 3 use the following line:
gconftool-2 -s -t string /desktop/gnome/shell/windows/button_layout ":minimize,maximize,close"
Using the Gconf-Editor, just go to desktop > gnome > shell and change the key “button_layout” to the value “:minimize,maximize,close”, according to the screenshot below:

New Ubuntu Scrollbar

Lately the design area from the OpenSource World is really busy and creative. A cuple of days back (during the Ubuntu 11.04 Alpha 3 release) we saw significants Unity design changes, then we saw the Gnome 3 changes (maximize and minimize buttons) and finally we heard about the new overlay scrollbars for Ubuntu 11.04.
According to the Canonical Design Blog the goal is to achieve a higher content immersion during user tasks, avoiding a polluted interface and reducing the chrome usage.
The most interesting is that Canonical is not the first one to aim this kind of changes. A couple of years ago Google presented their new product, Google Wave, which had a similar scrollbar, with overlay and less intrusive. Unfortunately the new service was received well and faded away.

Nova Barra de Rolagem no Ubuntu 11.04

Recentemente a área de design OpenSource tem estado bem ocupada e ao mesmo tempo criativa. A poucos dias (no lanamento do Alpha 3 do Ubuntu 11.04) tivemos as mudanças significativas no Unity, em seguida vimos as mudanças do Gnome 3 (botões de Maximizar e Minimizar) e agora foi noticiado um re-design das barras de rolagem no Ubuntu 11.04.
Conforme o blog de design Canonical essa mudança tem como base a tentativa de aumentar a imersão do usuário em suas tarefas, evitando um design poluído, e reduzir a utilização de chrome em sua interface.
O interessante é que a Canonical não foi a primeira a ter essa ideia. A alguns anos o Google lançou o Google Wave queapresentava uma barra de rolagem menos intrusiva e com algumas funcionalidades semelhantes ao projeto da Canonical. Infelizmente, apesar de inovador e promissor, o serviço da Google não foi pra frente e acabou esquecido.
