Novidades do Gnome 3.4.1 No Arch Linux

Finalmente, o GNOME 3.4.1 está disponível no repositório extra do Arch Linux! O GNOME 3.4 foi originalmente lançado em 28 de Março, mas em 18 de Abril recebeu sua primeira atualização, a versão 3.4.1. Desde o seu lançamento o GNOME 3 tem causado muita discussão, seja pela completa quebra de paradigma — boa parte causada pelo Gnome-Shell —, ou pela falta de polimento em detalhes. Mas não se esqueçam, o GNOME 3 ainda é um trabalho em andamento e aos poucos todos os seus detalhes serão corrigidos e suas funcionalidades (que ainda estão ausentes) serão reimplementadas.
Mas como todos já sabem, sou um entusiasta deste novo ambiente desde que ele tinha uma cara horrível (procurem no Google o princípio do Gnome-Shell), então eu estava aguardando a chegada desta release nos repositórios do Arch Linux.

Olá pessoal, como faço parte de grupo de traduções do Gnome-Pie trago essa notícia de primeira mão: O Gnome-Pie versão 0.5 está para ser lançado! Isso mesmo, Simon Schneegans — o autor — acabou de solicitar que eu atualizasse a tradução do projeto para o Português do Brasil.
O Gnome-Pie é um aplicativo que além de ser muito útil é extremamente robusto e bonito, por esses e outros fatores ele já apareceu aqui no Mind Bending Blog outras duas vezes (aqui e aqui). Caso você não saiba do que se trata, recomendo que assista aos vídeos abaixo:

A Tour Through The New Gnome 3.2

In the last Oct. First, Gnome 3.2 was moved to the Arch Linux Extra repository. Several new features and applications were added in this new version, but not all are installed automatically when you perform an upgrade from Gnome 3.0. That’s right, this is one of the bad things of a “rolling release”.

Instalando o Gnome Pie – Ubuntu e Arch Linux

Recentemente foi lançada uma aplicação muito legal chamada Gnome-Pie, escrita por Simon Schneegans. De acordo com o autor ela foi inspirada no add-on escrito para o jogo Word of Warcraft chamado O-Pie. Tenho que admitir que sua parte gráfica me lembra muito uma outra aplicação chamada PieDock, já o seu funcionamento e comportamento tem uma abordagem completamente diferente, possibilitando ao usuário invocar diversos “menus” diferentes baseado em teclas de atalho, ele possibilita até mesmo o controle de aplicações multimídia!

Installing Gnome Pie in Arch Linux

Recently a nice application called Gnome-Pie, made by Simon Schneegans, was released. According to the author it was inspired by an add-on written for the game World of Warcraft called O-Pie. I have to admit that it remembers me a lot PieDock, although it has a really different approach and usage, giving you the possibility to invoke a lot of different “menus”, you can even control you media player!

Despite Gnome-Pie early release it already has a lot of nice features and themes. Let’s take a look at this video to better understand it and then I’ll show you how to install it on Ubuntu and Arch Linux:

Quando o Gnome 3 saiu eu achei que levaria mais tempo para aparecer temas bons para o Gnome3/Gnome Shell. Eu estava errado. É engraçado como, mesmo tendo 5 anos de comunidade GNU/Linux, agente ainda é surpreendido.

When Gnome 3 was launched, I thought it would take some time until the first nice Gnome 3/Gnome Shell themes arrive. And I was wrong. It’s funny how, even after 5 years in the GNU/Linux community, we can still be surprised.
I gathered some nice Gnome 3/Gnome Shell themes that I found:

Some time ago, at Planet Gnome, I started to stumble upon some news about a PyGTK deprecation. According to that last link, PyGTK 2.24 was it’s last release. This module is being replaced by GObject Introspection, or how it’s being called around here: PyGI.
For those who want some more info about this change, I strongly suggest to follow the Ubuntu App Development Week, they made 2 sessions about the PyGTK deprecation and how PyGI will work. The first one is GObject Introspection: The New Way For Developing GNOME Apps in Python, JavaScript and Others, with Tomeu Vizoso, and the other was PyGTK is dead, long live PyGI! Using gobject-introspection in Python, with Martin Pitt.
Based on others libraries that I saw disappear (HAL for example), I can say that PyGTK will still be around for a while. So, there’s no need to rush and port your GTK app, we got pleanty of time for this. Beyond that, there is no official PyGI documentation (at least I haven’t found). According to what I read, the PyGI module is already available in many distributions. You can test it with the following line:
$ python -c 'from gi.repository import Gtk; print Gtk'
There is only a slight problem, everything is outdated. All the significant changes are being prepperad to be pushed to Ubuntu 11.04 and Debian Unstable.
But one thin is sure, when I put my hands on an updated version of PyGI I’ll post some tutorials about how to write GTK applications using Python and PyGI. Until then…

Há algum tempo tenho visto lido no Planet Gnome informações de que o módulo PyGTK será descontinuada. Conforme esse último link, possivelmente o PyGTK 2.24 foi a última versão lançada. Esse módulo será substituída por GObject Introspection, ou como está sendo chamada PyGI.
Para aqueles que querem mais informações sobre essa mudança, sugiro acompanhar a Ubuntu App Development Week pois houveram 2 sessões sobre o abandono do PyGTK e como funcionará o novo PyGI. A primeira delas foi GObject Introspection: The New Way For Developing GNOME Apps in Python, JavaScript and Others, com Tomeu Vizoso, e a outra foi PyGTK is dead, long live PyGI! Using gobject-introspection in Python, com Martin Pitt.
Baseado em outras bibliotecas que foram descontinuadas, eu afirmo com certeza que o PyGTK ainda estará por aqui por um certo tempo, então nada de pânico e/ou desespero para migrar suas aplicações, teremos tempo para isso. Além do mais, ainda não há (pelo menos eu não encontrei) uma documentação específica. De acordo com o que eu li, o módulo PyGI já está disponível em diversas distribuições, basta testar da seguinte forma:
$ python -c 'from gi.repository import Gtk; print Gtk'
O único problema é que ainda estão todas desatualizadas. Essas mudanças ainda serão disponibilizadas na versão beta do Ubuntu 11.04 e no Debian Unstable.
Uma coisa é certa, assim que eu tiver acesso à versão atualizada do módulo PyGI eu postarei alguns tutoriais aqui sobre como escrever aplicações GTK usando o Python e o PyGI. Até lá…

Yesterday, April 7th, finally Gnome 3.0 arrived. As the staff of the Gnome was always blogging about all the recent development, we did not have many surprises beyond what we already knew.
Beyond that, there was an update at the project web page. Now it features some videos showing how to use the new Gnome. For more videos you can visit the Youtube chanel and don’t forget to follow Gnome at twitter and Identica. For those who use Ubuntu 11.04 and want to test it, is easy:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get install gnome-shellIn case you don’t get used to it and want to remove, just follow these commands:
sudo apt-get install ppa-purge
sudo ppa-purge ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3For the curious and insecure, there is a live version (based in fedora or openSuSe) which can be downloaded in the Gnome 3.0 Download Page and can run in a CD/DVD or a USB stick. Visit the page for more instructions.
